Here for Hope

May 20, 2021

The Little Community Pantry gives hope to those doing it tough.  We are proud to continue to support OzHarvest Sunshine Coast who seeks to lend a helping hand to those who are less fortunate and at the same time do our part to help protect the environment. We sat down with Michele, Chapter Coordinator of OzHarvest Sunshine Coast.

 The demand continues

“In March 2020 and with the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, demand for OzHarvest Sunshine Coast food donations dramatically increased by 50 percent. This figure eventually stabilised to about 30 percent above pre-Covid-19 levels during the latter part of 2020. More recently, community groups and organisations are reporting an increase level of need brought about by the impact of rental stress and changes to JobSeeker and JobKeeper payments.

In efforts to address the unprecedented demand, over the last 14 months, OzHarvest Sunshine Coast has been extremely fortunate in receiving a number of grants that allowed it to purchase food staples (produce) to supplement its food rescue operations.

Thank you Noosa Civic Community!

Equally important has been the community support that has resulted in record levels of donations being made to The Little Community Pantry at Noosa Civic. The donated pantry items have been the lifeline for dry goods distributed to vulnerable community members via local charities on the Coast. Every fortnight, OzHarvest is distributing over 100 kg of canned and dry goods to the most vulnerable members of the community – whether it be those who are escaping domestic violence to families and individuals who are bearing the brunt of economic stress.  A box of pantry items can feed a family for a week and a can of soup can be a dinner for a homeless person.

Since its establishment in 2016, The Little Community Pantry has been the primary source of dry goods donations to OzHarvest Sunshine Coast. In the last year, the importance of the pantry to OzHarvest food rescue operations cannot be overstated. Since July 2020 alone, over 2,400 kg of pantry items have been donated to the Pantry – that is the equivalent of 7,200 meals!

Community donations have literally resulted in the ability of people to put food on the table. The Little Community Pantry represents the best of us all – it is purely and simply the finest example of locals helping locals in times of need.”
